Rice Water For Hair Growth? (Healthy Hair Tips Pt. 3)
You might be wondering what is rice water and why are people putting it in their hair? I first heard of this trend from TikTok. Apparently, people are letting rice and water soak overnight, then using the nasty water in their hair the next day to promote hair growth. Yes, this is the same rice that you cook with. The same rice you use to make stir fry, ham-fried rice, or Hawaiian haystacks. So why are people putting it in their hair?! (click here to read Healthy Hair Tips Part 1)
Legend Says…
Back in the ancient Heian period, there was a group of women in Japan who used to bathe in rice water. These women had long beautiful, floor-length hair. This fermented rice water wash was also practiced by a group of women in China as part of their cultural rituals. Women and men nowadays are looking for new ways to grow their hair. This wash seems like it might be a good solution.
What is in the Rice That’s Good For Hair?
So there’s actually not a lot of research on this. Supposably rice water acts as a protein treatment for your hair. There are different types of hair (high porosity, and low porosity). You should figure out what type of hair you have first before you decide if your hair type would do good with protein treatments, and how often to do them.
Inositol – People are saying this is the key ingredient to why rice water works. Rice water also contains lot of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.
What Kind of Rice Should I Use in My Hair?
Whatever you do, do not use instant rice! Instant rice is stripped of its nutrients. Do you think they had instant rice in the Heian period?….. no! The rice with the most nutrients is probably brown rice. In fact, brown rice was probably the only rice they had back then. Some people say you can use jasmine rice or basmati rice, but do you think that existed back then?… no. Be selective with where you get your rice too! Try to use organic rice that is less likely to be sprayed with harsh chemicals. Just try to buy the purest form you can get.
