My Hair Care Routine (Healthy Hair Tips Pt. 5)

I know you’ve all been waiting for my hair care routine! I share TikTok’s all the time of the products I use, but this blog post will be a lot easier to explain everything! I will go over the shampoo and conditioners I use, how often I wash my hair, if I blow dry my hair, and other products I use. I would like to point out that the products I use are for my high porosity normal-dry hair. I have really fine strands but I also have a lot of them! My hair needs moisture and leave-in products. Make sure you are choosing products wisely for the hair type you have!

What Shampoo/Conditioner Do I Use?

The shampoo and conditioner I use the most these days is the Kirkland brand from Costco! The Shampoo is to die for! It makes me want to massage my head and run my fingers through my hair when I use it. You’ll know what I’m talking about if you purchase it! The conditioner is average but it doesn’t make my hair greasy.

I love it because it’s affordable, sulfate-free, and I read once that it is supposably the same formula a Pureology. However, I use Pureology sometimes and it does not have the same scents as Pureology at all. Pureology has a minty scent and a floral scent in their shampoo and conditioner and it is my absolute favorite! It does have a similar texture to the Kirkland brand though. If it wasn’t so expensive I would use Pureology every time!

Another Shampoo and Conditioner brand I love is Paul Mitchel Tea Tree! I have used this one for long periods of time. I love the peppermint smell so much! I started to notice my hair got curlier when I used their products, and my hair got slightly drier. Not dry enough to notice a huge difference, but just enough to notice. I have no clue why my hair was curlier when I was using this. Maybe it’s because it was actually restoring my hair and working??

This past month I have been using Olaplex products. I reached out to them to collab and they sent me a few products. So far I am loving them. The girl I’ve been emailing said you can use the shampoo and conditioner for daily use, then the other products only use once a week. I use their No. 3 Hair Perfector, then the No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo, and lastly I use their new No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask.

Do I Switch Up My Shampoo/Conditioner?

Yes! I heard once that switching up your products is healthy for your hair. However, that myth has now been debunked. If you find a good product you like, you should stick to it. Don’t fix it if it aint broke right? For the past three years, I’ve been using Kirkland for about 6-9 months, then switching to Paul Mitchel Tea tree for about 6 months, then I repeat.

Now I am using Olaplex once a week, and Kirkland the other times I wash my hair. Maybe in another 3 months, I’ll switch to Pureology again and still continue using Olaplex once a week. I think it’s really important to stick with your products for at least 3-6 months to fully get results!

Deep Conditioners + Leave In Products.

I love using a deep conditioner or a moisture mask once a week. Right now I am using the new Olaplex No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask.

I also use a leave-in conditioner every time I wash my hair! When I was little I had the most tangly hair. My mom would use a detangler each time. Nowadays, it’s difficult to find a detangler, so I just use leave-in conditioners to help my tangles. Brushing my hair in the shower while I have conditioner on also helps.

My Routine:

I wash my hair about twice a week. Once a week with Olaplex, and once a week with Kirkland or Pureology. I massage the shampoo just in my roots and I do not put shampoo in the ends of my hair. I put the conditioner all over my hair, but not too much at the roots. I wash my body/shave for about 5-10 min while the conditioner sits in my hair.

Once a week I do an extensive hair wash with the No. 3 Olaplex Hair Perfector first, then shampoo, then a deep conditioner or moisture mask in the shower. Most of the time I’ll take a bath because the products all need to soak in for about 10 min each.

I use a leave-in conditioner and 100% Argan Oil every time my hair is freshly washed and damp. I then let my hair air dry for a bit, then finish it off with a blow-drier if I’m going for the straight look. If I’m planning on curling my hair or leaving it wavy, I will let my hair air-dry all the way.

I then use heat on my hair(and heat protectant). My hair should stay styled for the first two days, and the days after that I’ll wear my hair in a bun, ponytail, claw clips, or something that doesn’t require heat.

I did the rice water challenge once a week for 3 months, and I am now taking a break. I measured my hair each week, and I definitely saw positive results from it. More info on Rice Water in this blog post. The only reason I am stopping is to try Olaplex products, and because it’s exhausting to make.

And that’s my hair care routine! If anyone has more questions, comment below or DM me on Instagram and I’m happy to share my routine with you! xx Michelle.
